final exam

I am in favor of the 2 long essay questions. Or 1 long essay question and 2 short ones work too. I feel like with 2 broad long essay questions we can cover a broader range of knowledge that we've accumulated over the semester versus 4 shorter and more specific questions.

Super Typhoon Haiyan

The Asian world seem to be constantly pounded with super storms. This week Super Typhoon Haiyan has been pounding the Philippines since last Friday. It has killed at least 4 people and displaced thousands. Thousands more has been without electricity.

Many popular beach resort destinations such as Borocay is threatened by the typhoon and is forcing vacation go-ers to leave the resort early.

I have friends that live in Cebu where the typhoon has not hit as bad as other parts of the Philippines:

China Smog Emergency

China has forced public areas to close down after a "smog emergency". All large cities shut down in Northern California including Beijing. Schools were forced to suspend classes and airports to close. According to the article:

An index measuring PM2.5, or particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5), reached a reading of 1,000 in some parts of Harbin, the gritty capital of northeastern Heilongjiang province and home to some 11 million people.A level above 300 is considered hazardous, while the World Health Organisation recommends a daily level of no more than 20.

 The Chinese government has announced plans over the years to tackle this issue, but very little has been done to actually fix the problem.

I have actually been to Beijing recently and the smog is ridiculous. You can barely see the building in front of you and it seems like it is constantly foggy. The air is thick, and unlike california, extremely humid. In California, when it is foggy, it is typically a cold, crisp air, but in China it is extremely thick and warm. Gross.

This is Shanghai. That "fog" is actually smog and you cant even see Shanghai's skyline in the background.

This is the site of the Olympic Stadium in Beijing. You cant even see the rest of the city in the background because the smog is so thick.

This is the Great Wall of China. The air was extremely thick and HOT. Hiking this wall was not an easy feat. 

Here is me, my brother and my dad struggling to climb the wall while my mom snaps a photo :) notice how steep the steps actually are!

Typhoon in Japan

A typhoon (Wipha) has devastated the Japanese Islands yesterday. The typhoon killed 22 people and more than 30 people are still missing. There was a concern that more lives would have been saved if the government would have issued an evacuation warning. Rescue teams searched through homes swept by mudslides in hopes of finding survivors. 

According to the article, flood warnings were issued but only implemented in small towns during the worst of the downpour. 

I would imagine such an advanced country such a Japan would be able to effectively warn their people of such dangers such as this and be able to effectively execute evacuations to save more lives.

Architecture

Islamic traditions seem to be the underlying style in the building of the Taj Mahal. There are inscriptions from the Koran cover much of both the exterior and interior walls by craftsmen from as far away as China and Italy (textbook, 194). Pointed archways is characteristic of Islamic architecture and it is present in the building of the Taj Mahal. The beautiful inlay of floral patterns is also a characteristic of Islamic architecture. This is the Mosque of Sultan Ahmed at Istanbul, Turkey. It bears a resemblance to the Taj Mahal and was built from 1610-1616. The Taj Mahal was built in 1630-1653.

This is the Sultan Hussan Mosque in Cairo, Egypt. It has similar inlay style patterns on the interior walls as well as the pointed arch--both characteristics

Curse of the Golden Flower

Although this movie has no historical references whatsoever, it is still interesting to get a sense of Chinese culture, fashion, and values from this movie. I highly recommend this movie and would have to say it's one of my favorite Chinese movies of all times. Watch it in Chinese with English subtitles though because I've seen the dubbed versions and the translations were horrible and difficult to get the point across.

The film does an AMAZING job at showing the splendor of ancient Chinese dynasties. The filmography and setting is beautiful. They also show quite a bit of Chinese culture as well including favoring the eldest son (In Chinese culture they tend to bare the most responsibilities), rituals such as Chung Yeung festival.

The costume in this movie is beautiful as well. I'm pretty sure its not historically accurate--for example the empress' nail extensions were not popular until the 1500's I believe. The elaborate costumes might have been similar they seem pretty consistant in Chinese movies and dramas for the royal family.

China: Government Control Over Social Media

This article sheds light onto a a concept that we might not be very familiar with: the lack of freedom of speech.

As discussed in class a few weeks ago, most Asian countries value the community as a whole, rather than individuals--therefore the concept of freedom of speech might not hold as much value as it would here in America.

The article talks about large scale online bloggers that has come under fire for their use of blogging materials (usually against the government) feeding the wrong information to its followers. China is known for heavy censorship by their government for social media and this was no exception. Heavy fines and even prison time are the consequences of speaking out against the government. The government claims:

The Communist party's top theoretical journal – Qiushi, or Seeking Truth – warned that some were using internet freedoms "to engage in wanton defamation, attacking the party and the government …The internet is full of all kinds of negative news and critical voices saying the government only does bad things and everything it says is wrong."

This is a prime example of China's authoritarianism where the central government has all the legal power opposed to democracy where the power is split between groups.
